Fumbling As Fast As I Can

Fumbling As Fast As I Can
(Linda Chobotuk)

I'm the one at the counter that gives you the form to fill out
And it's faded and blurry and written in Sanscrit no doubt
But if you could read it you wouldn't, there's no need to shout
I'm fumbling as fast as I can

The system is down; sure we do it just so's you'll be late
And we can't get the parts 'cause the hardware is years out of date
And they even short-ship us on pencils, you'll just have to wait
And I'm fumbling as fast as I can

I get no respect and the pay has been frozen for years
And it's quit or I die, there's no chance of promotion it's clear
But strangest of all I mostly don't mind working here
And I'm fumbling as fast as I can

Two counters, three phone lines, the xerox, a cashbox and me
And a three-inch thick rule book laid down by those I don't see
If I don't seem quite human, forgive me, I've no time to be
And I'm fumbling as fast as I can

I'm the one at the counter that gives you the form to fill out
And it's faded and blurry and written in Sanscrit no doubt
But if you could read it you wouldn't, there's no need to shout
I'm fumbling as fast as I can
