Mother, I Come Home to Die Dear Mother I remembered well The parting kiss she gave to me When Mary rang the village bell My heart was full of joy & glee I did not dream that one short year Would crush the hopes that soared so high Oh Mother dear draw near to me Dear Mother I come home to die. cho: Call Brother Sister to my side And take(?) a soldiers last goodbye Oh Mother dear draw near to me Dear Mother I come home to die. Hark Mother tis the Village bell I can no longer with you stay My Country call to arms to arms The foe advance in fierce array We met the foe up on the field We kindred spirits did defy I fought for right God bless the flag Dear Mother I come home to die. Does anyone recognize this song that was scribbled in my Great- Grandfathers diary that he kept on the Civil War battlefields during 1864/1865. He served in the 14th N.Y.Volunteer Artillery and the 16th NY Artillery. RW Apr98
